Another day, another mall or a lifestyle hub in KL sprouted up like mushrooms — and I’m a shroom addict, one might say (legally, this is a joke). Steppes is Mont Kiara’s newest pet-friendly lifestyle and food hub.

Joining the likes of Sunway 163, The LINC KL and The Campus Ampang with its mix of indoor and outdoor spaces, many of its retail lots are still gearing up for opening. However, there’s already a solid lineup of eateries that’s worth making the trip for.

One thing that stood out right away to me was its rather unexpected location. Tucked between houses, you’ll need to turn in from the main road before going up a sloping driveway right into the entrance. Parking starts from RM2, with two levels of indoor parking and additional outdoor bays, though spaces are quite limited.

Although the walkways felt a little stuffy during our visit, the landscaping gives the place plenty of character. Instead of solely plain concrete paths, you’ll find thoughtfully designed walkways lined with rocks, greenery and different flooring materials that make the space feel more inviting. A number of shops were still under renovation, but the construction work wasn’t particularly disruptive.

With new tenants continuing to move in, Steppes is shaping up to be one of Mont Kiara’s latest food destinations. Here are 10 best food spots in Steppes Mont Kiara to add to your list on your next visit.

1. RAYs (LG3-01-3)

Despite being one of the newer cafes at Steppes Mont Kiara, RAYs has already built quite a following through word of mouth. The place was packed when we arrived, and there was a steady flow of diners throughout our visit, so expect to wait a little during peak hours.

The menu covers the usual cafe favourites, with a selection of Japanese-inspired dishes mixed in. Among everything we tried, the Tiger Prawn Linguine (RM35) and Ikura Salmon Mentaiko Don (RM36) stood out the most.

The Tiger Prawn Linguine is an aglio olio that keeps things classic with olive oil, garlic, chilli flakes and parsley, but still manages to pack plenty of flavour. Much of that comes from the tiger prawns, which had lovely char marks that added a smoky depth, although they were slightly overcooked.

At first glance, the Ikura Salmon Mentaiko Don doesn’t look particularly exciting, but it ended up being one of our favourites. The furikake rice was already flavourful on its own, while the tender salmon, creamy mayo slaw and edamame came together surprisingly well. Every component pulled its weight, and you’ll keep going back without realising you’ve almost finished it.

To cool things down, Berries Matcha Slushie (RM21) was a refreshing pick. The earthy matcha balanced nicely with the raspberry and strawberry purees, giving it a fruity tang without completely masking the matcha.
If coffee is more your thing, RAYs also serves brews made with One Half beans, making it just as suitable for a coffee stop as it is for a full meal.

2. La Pané Pizza (LG3-01-01)

Right beside RAYs is La Pané Pizza — another strong name among foodies for serving superb sourdough pizza, and a few sides, drinks, and desserts. Their first outlet is at Taman Melawati, with Steppes Mont Kiara being their newest venture.

If you’re after something classic, the Margherita (RM32) keeps it simple with tomato, ricotta, basil and olive oil. For a crowd favourite, the Pepperoni (RM36) comes topped with beef or chicken pepperoni, jalapeños, mozzarella and a drizzle of honey for a sweet-spicy finish.

Those looking for something a little different can opt for the Sunshine (RM35), which pairs chicken, pineapple and apricot over fior di latte, while the Angus (RM50) layers juicy Black Angus skirt steak with roasted onions for a heartier option.

Don’t skip dessert if you still have room. The Panecotta (RM18) is a house favourite, while the Soft Serve Vanilla Ice Cream (RM8) topped with salted maple walnuts is a simple way to end the meal. If coffee is on the cards, Affogato (RM15) is always a solid choice.

3. One Half (LG 1-07-1)

Coffee lovers will probably already be familiar with One Half, and its Steppes Mont Kiara outlet marks the brand’s third location after its two Petaling Jaya branches. Out of the three, this one easily feels like the cosiest, making it a nice spot to slow down over a cup of coffee.

A visit here isn’t quite complete without ordering the Mont Blanc (RM20). Consider it the drink to get if it’s your first time here. Even as someone who usually gravitates towards nutty coffee over fruity profiles, this was a reminder of just how well One Half handles lighter, fruit-forward beans.
We also tried the Panama Berlina Estate Geisha Washed in a Flat White (RM17). With tasting notes of nectarine, orange and white tea, it delivered bright, fruity flavours that were clean without becoming overpowering. The perfectly steamed milk rounded everything out nicely, resulting in a cup that still let the character of the beans shine through.
If you’re particular about your coffee, One Half is easily one of the strongest picks at Steppes Mont Kiara.

4. BASK.

When the cheesecake craving hits while you’re at Steppes Mont Kiara, BASK. is your best bet. Their burnt cheesecakes have built a following over the years, but don’t overlook the coffee while you’re here.

If you’re only getting one slice, make it the Yuri Matcha Burnt Cheesecake (RM26). Served with a dollop of cream, the cheesecake was rich and velvety with deep, earthy matcha notes. The lightly sweetened cream softened the matcha‘s slight bitterness, making every bite well-balanced.
To go with it, we had a Flat White (RM18) brewed with Fruit of Eden beans from Curate Coffee Roasters. Expect tasting notes of peach, lychee, black tea and wildflower. As someone who usually prefers nutty coffees, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this one. It was bright and aromatic without being overly acidic, and it might just be the cup that slowly converts me into a fruity coffee fan.

5. Fujin Ramen (LG1-06-1)

If you’re looking for pork-free ramen in Steppes Mont Kiara, Fujin Ramen is one to check out. The menu centres around rich chicken-based broths, alongside a handful of sides that make it easy to turn your ramen into a full meal.

A popular pick is Fujin Tori Paitan (RM32), featuring a creamy, full-bodied chicken broth. If you prefer a bit of heat, Aka Tori Paitan (RM34) offers the same comforting base with a spicy kick that gradually builds as you eat.

For something different, go for Ebi Tsukemen (RM38). Instead of serving the noodles in broth, they’re paired with a rich prawn dipping sauce that coats every strand with plenty of umami, making it a great option if you’re after bolder flavours.

6. Fujisawa Izakaya (G-03-1)

For a casual Japanese food paired with skewers and grilled bites, Fujisawa Izakaya is a great spot to gather with friends at Steppes Mont Kiara. The menu is packed with everything from premium wagyu and seafood to affordable yakitori, making it easy to order a spread for sharing.

If you’re in the mood to treat yourself, start with Australia Wagyu M6 with Sauce (RM25.90) or A5 Japan Wagyu (RM25.90). Both are lightly grilled to let the quality of the beef shine, while Gyu Tongue (RM15.90) is another favourite among yakiniku fans.
Seafood lovers will have plenty to choose from too. The Unagi (RM15.50), Salmon Shioyaki (RM14.50), Salmon Teriyaki (RM14.50) and Hotate Teriyaki (RM8.90) are all popular picks.
To round off the meal, add a Yaki Onigiri (RM5.90) or Tamago Yaki (RM5.90) to the table.

7. Steka Grill House (G-03-2 & G-03-3)

If a proper steak dinner is what you’re after, Steka Grill House is one of the standout dining spots at Steppes Mont Kiara. Instead of only a fixed steak menu, the restaurant offers daily hand-selected cuts, with each portion individually weighed, so you’ll get to choose from what’s available that day.

One of the signature cuts is O’Connor Black Angus Ribeye MBS+ (RM60 per 100g) from Australia. Known for its generous marbling and rich beefy flavour, it’s a great choice if you enjoy a classic ribeye with a buttery finish. Portions typically range from 200g to 350g, and it’s best enjoyed medium rare or medium.
For something even more indulgent, the Stone Axe Full Blood Wagyu Ribeye MB9+ (RM90 per 100g) is sourced from one of Australia’s most renowned wagyu producers. Grain-fed for over 400 days, the beef is prized for its intense marbling, buttery texture and rich umami in every bite.
Since the selection changes consistently, every visit can be a little different. If you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply craving a premium steak, Steka Grill House is one of the best places to do it at Steppes Mont Kiara.

8. LAMA Nyonya Restaurant (G-1-1)

For a taste of traditional Nyonya cuisine in Steppes Mont Kiara, LAMA Nyonya Restaurant serves up familiar Peranakan classics in a cosy setting that’s well-suited for family meals and group gatherings.

A good way to kick things off is with the appetisers. The Pie Tee (RM20) comes filled with julienned vegetables and topped with shrimp, while the Chicken 5 Spices Lobak (RM26) wraps well-seasoned minced chicken in beancurd skin before frying it until crisp. If you’re dining in a group, the Tok Panjang Appetiser Platter (RM58 for 5, RM98 for 10) lets everyone sample a little of everything.

For mains, you’ll find plenty of Peranakan favourites. The Ayam Pongteh (RM36) is a comforting dish of chicken braised with fermented soybeans and potatoes, while Ayam Kapitan (RM36) offers a richer, spicier curry infused with coconut milk and aromatic spices.
If you’re dining with a bigger group, LAMA also offers set meals for 5 (RM388) and 10 (RM788), taking the guesswork out of ordering while letting you enjoy a spread of the restaurant’s signature dishes.

9. Seogam Korean BBQ (G-02-2)

If Korean barbecue is your go-to comfort food, Seogam Korean BBQ is one of the must-visit spots at Steppes Mont Kiara. The menu focuses on premium pork cuts grilled over the table, alongside hearty Korean side dishes to complete the meal.

They serve a variety of cuts, including Pork Belly (Samgyeopsal), Pork Jowl, Thick-Sliced Pork Belly and Gochujang Samgyeop, each offering a different texture and flavour once grilled. If you’re feeling adventurous, Gochujang Pork Intestine is another popular option, bringing a rich, chewy bite coated in a spicy marinade.

For something warm and comforting, there are several soups and stews to choose from, including Seafood Ramyeon, Seafood Doenjang Stew and Pork Kimchi Stew. You can also round off your barbecue feast with extras like Rice Cake Wraps or Grilled Cheese for an indulgent finishing touch.

10. The Heirloom & Co (G-06-1)

Not every meal at Steppes Mont Kiara has to end in a food coma. The Heirloom & Co, which has chosen Steppes as its first Kuala Lumpur home, offers a menu centred around fresh salads, grain bowls, wraps and specialty coffee for days when you’re after something a little lighter.

For salads, Chicken Cobb Salad (RM32.90) comes loaded with chicken breast, avocado, heirloom tomatoes and a spicy jalapeño ranch dressing, while Chimichurri Beef Salad (RM36.90) pairs Angus beef cubes with fresh greens and a herbaceous chimichurri dressing.
If you’re after something more filling, the grain bowls are a good bet. The Honey Wasabi Salmon Grain Bowl (RM36.90) combines salmon fillet with asparagus, sweet corn and soy nitsume sauce, while Miso Beef Grain Bowl (RM36.90) features Angus beef cubes, edamame, hanjuku egg and roasted sesame dressing.
Prefer to customise your meal? You can also build your own bowl from RM22.90.

To round things off, pair your meal with one of the caf3’s drinks. Coffee lovers can try Coconut Latte (RM18) or Espresso Tonic (RM18), while non-coffee drinkers will find options like Matcha Latte (RM17) and Houjicha Latte (RM16).
