Pre-packaged food can save you loads of time and makes things extra breezy in the kitchen. However, if you have allergies, you might want to be extra careful. The current Vegetalk recall of 2 products is the perfect example.
The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has detected gluten in two of Vegetalk Food Supplies Pte Ltd’s products originating from Malaysia. As such, SFA has called for a mass recall of Vegetalk’s Pure Vegetarian Mutton Rendang Curry and Vegetarian Golden Roast Duck.

Vegetalk Food Supplies, which imports the products, has announced that it will be recalling and relabelling them to alert consumers to the presence of gluten as directed by SFA.

A recall of the affected product batches is currently underway. They are Vegetalk Pure Vegetarian Mutton Rendang Curry marked to expire on 15 Mar 2024 and Vegetalk Vegetarian Golden Roast Duck marked to expire on 15 Jul 2024.

The failure to declare the presence of allergens in food is especially serious as allergens could result in adverse reactions in those who are allergic to them. To safeguard public health, food products containing ingredients known to cause hypersensitivity must be declared on their packaging label under Singapore’s food regulations.

Moreover, every ingredient in pre-packaged food should be specified on their respective product labels. The ingredients should be listed in descending order of their proportions by weight.
Although gluten, a type of naturally occurring protein found in wheat and other grains does not affect most consumers, it is still an allergen that requires extra care. SFA advises consumers who have purchased the affected products, and who are allergic or sensitive to gluten to avoid consumption of the implicated Vegetalk products.
