Numerous overseas eatery chains, particularly from China, are eyeing our shores for expansion, including Yao Yao Sauerkraut Fish. They recently launched their flagship outlet at VivoCity on 3 Aug 2023.
Yao Yao Sauerkraut Fish stands out as a unique culinary concept, offering a delightful combination of its signature sauerkraut fish and delectable Peking duck, all under a single roof.
The restaurant has a charming tiffany blue-and-white colour scheme, featuring a delightful mascot resembling our iconic Merlion. However, instead of a lion, it is an adorable bear exuding an icy-cold expression.
One of its signature dishes is the YAO YAO Sauerkraut Fish (S$48 for 2 pax, S$68 for 3-4 pax), where tender sliced California White Seabass is cooked alongside sauerkraut that has been fermented for 24 days.
If you can’t make up your mind on which flavoured fish to get, not to worry. The menu offers Yao Yao Super Combination where you can mix and match to your own preference.
There’s the Yao Yao Sauerkraut Fish & Tomato Fish (S$53 for 2 pax) or if you’re craving for some fried munchies, the Yao Yao Sauerkraut Fish & Typhoon Shelter Shrimp w Fries (S$53 for 2 pax) will do just the trick.
For a small party, the ideal choice is the Yao Yao Peking Duck (Half) (S$45), while the whole version is available at S$90.
What sets it apart is the addition of honeydew melon strips and a homemade sesame dip, elevating the experience and allowing you to explore delightful taste combinations alongside the traditional Peking duck sauce, cucumber strips, and shredded green onions.
Additionally, the set includes a serving of garlic and Sichuan pepper duck leg. These delectable morsels are perfectly fried and topped with a fragrant and mildly-spiced chilli, resulting in an exceptionally delicious treat.
Certainly worth mentioning is the Sour & Spicy Organic White Fungus (S$9). Resembling mini hollow wantons in shape, this dish cleverly traps some of the delightful gravy below. With a crunchy texture, it quickly became one of my personal favourites!
On the other hand, the XXL Crispy You Tiao (S$5) left much to be desired. Despite its giant size comparable to my arm, it proved to be a tough challenge to chew on and was laden with excessive oil, making it a less enjoyable experience.
I concluded the meal with the visually stunning Rainbow Cold Jelly (S$8). This delightful bowl featured homemade oolong tea-flavoured jelly, adorned with raisins, red beans, crushed peanuts, hawthorn bits, pearl barley, and accompanied by a side of luscious coconut milk.
Do take note that from 7 to 9 Aug 2023, you can enjoy 58% off Yao Yao Sauerkraut Fish for 2 persons (S$20.20, U.P $48) when you dine-in to celebrate their opening, as well as Singapore’s 58th birthday!
