If there is one reason to cross into Johor Bahru with purpose and joy, it is seafood. And few places capture that spirit quite like SANG Seafood in Taman Damansara Aliff. Once known as Grand Pacific Seafood, the restaurant was reimagined in 2019 under the Sang Group. What stands today is the modern expression of a beloved legacy that has fed generations of Johoreans and cross-border regulars.

SANG Seafood - Storefront

It has earned its place in local lore as the cradle of Johor Bahru’s first halal Chilli Crab and a pioneer of halal Chinese seafood. Yet SANG Seafood never leans on nostalgia alone. Its kitchen works diligently — marrying quality, flavour, and value in a way that makes the dining experience feel familiar yet refreshingly current. Dishes arrive meant to be shared, talked over, and photographed.

SANG Seafood - Entrance

Those who remember its Danga Bay era might feel a wave of recognition. The restaurant’s former façade once stood proudly by the waterfront, a beacon for supper hunters and family gatherings. Today, SANG Seafood has settled into a more refined home, trading the sea breeze for air-conditioned ease and a layout designed with modern diners in mind.

SANG Seafood - Rooms & seatings

Large round tables keep the spirit of togetherness alive, while smaller tables set the stage for lunch breaks, after-work cravings, and the occasional date that calls for good food without the fuss. Tucked behind soft velvet curtains is a private room that feels like a secret whispered between friends.

Any lingering doubt about its reputation disappears the moment the clock edges past opening time. Diners arrive in a steady stream, and tables fill with surprising speed. Many are reserved well in advance, testament to the restaurant’s loyal following. If you’re planning a weekday visit or a weekend feast, securing a spot beforehand is a wise move.

What I tried at SANG Seafood

SANG Seafood - Sang Chilli Crab

Skipping SANG Seafood’s crown jewel would feel like walking past a winning ticket on the pavement. The instant the Sang Special Chilli Crab (RM98 for 1 piece) reached our table, the air shifted. A warm tide of aromatics floated in first, followed by the unmistakable sweetness of fresh crab. The bowl itself looked like a painting, a sunset of red and gold glistening under the lights, promising an unforgettable meal.

SANG Seafood - Chilli crab sauce

The crab’s claws raised proudly as though greeting the room, a reminder that it came straight from the in-house tanks out back and into the wok just for us. The gravy wrapped around the crab in a thick, glossy coat, fragrant with chilli, tomato, and generous pockets of crabmeat.

Paired with rice, it was comfort at full volume, but sipping the gravy on its own felt downright decadent. My spice threshold is notoriously high, so it barely tickled me, though my colleague insisted it leaned toward a confident five on the heat scale.

SANG Seafood - Crab parts

Then came the real work, the kind that leaves you grinning in anticipation. Gloves on, tools ready, and the first crack of the shell felt like unlocking a tiny treasure chest. The crab flesh emerged in ribbons of sweetness, firm and juicy, tasting as though someone bottled a clean ocean breeze.

The claws delivered pure pleasure, yet the head was the true reward. A little sauce, a little rice, and suddenly it turned into a silky, congee-like spoonful that made the table collectively hum in approval.

SANG Seafood - Nyonya seabass

Just when we thought nothing could follow that performance, the Deep Fried Seabass with Signature Nyonya Sauce (RM68) swept onto the table as if it knew it had something to prove. The seabass announced itself with a golden crisp that could be heard before it was tasted, each edge curled into delicate shards while the centre stayed plush and flaky.

SANG Seafood - Fish

The sauce tied everything together with flair. Imagine a bold meeting between sambal berlado and a dry assam reduction, fragrant enough to make you sit up straighter, tangy enough to steal your attention, and savoury enough to convince you to keep dipping long after the fish is gone. It clung to the seabass in all the right ways, every bite bright and addictive.

SANG Seafood - Nestum prawn

In Malaysia, it feels almost unscripted that the Golden Nestum Prawn Cluster (RM48) appears at the table. SANG Seafood gives it star treatment, beginning with a mountain of crispy Nestum. It shimmered with buttery fragrance, the kind that makes everyone lean in before anyone dares to take the first scoop.

The prawns beneath were equally impressive, lightly battered and fried just long enough to achieve that delicate crunch while keeping the inside juicy and naturally sweet. Clean, plump, and prepared with precision, they disappeared faster than good gossip at brunch. Order more than you think you need, because this dish vanishes in seconds.

SANG Seafood - Crunchy honey baby squid

The seafood medley continued with the Crunchy Baby Squid with Honey Sauce (RM38). I rarely reach for squid at the start of a meal, but this one rewired my instincts. Each piece arrived glistening in a soy-honey glaze that hinted at caramel and warmth, forming a delicate, candy-like shell around every curl of squid.

SANG Seafood - Squid

The bite was perfect, a crisp snap that gave way to tender squid without the usual chewiness that can make you regret your choice. It could easily stand alone as a snack, something you’d munch on absentmindedly while chatting, though pairing it with rice turns it into something even more substantial.

SANG Seafood - Sze chuan soup

For a touch of comfort between the bold flavours, the Hot & Sour Sze Chuan Soup (RM12.80) offered a warm pause. Steam curled from the bowl like a gentle exhale, carrying the familiar perfume of vinegar, pepper, and earthy spices. The soup had a cosy thickness to it, wrapping the palate in heat that nudged rather than pushed.

Those visiting with family or a larger group will appreciate the Value Set for Four (RM218), a lineup that features dishes like Deep Fried Seabass with Traditional Kampung Style Sauce and Prawn Cluster with Pumpkin Cheese Sauce. It is a thoughtful spread designed to please every type of diner at the table.

If you are dropping by alone, the Lunch Bento Set is a delightful discovery. Starting at RM18, it offers comforting favourites such as Sweet and Sour Chicken and Salted Egg Chicken, perfect for a midday fuel.

Final thoughts

SANG Seafood - Dishes

SANG Seafood welcomed us the way an old friend might, with an easy warmth that settled in before the first dish even arrived. By the time we stood to leave, our stomachs were pleasantly full and our hearts felt just as satisfied. Every plate carried the essence of a craft refined over decades, every interaction from the team felt sincere, and the ambience wrapped the evening in a soft kind of comfort that lingered even on the way out.

If Johor Bahru is already on your radar, let this be the spot you circle in red. And when you come, bring the people you love eating with most. Meals like these deserve company, laughter, shared forks, and the kind of memories that follow you home long after the final bite.

Expected damage: RM18++ – RM80++ per pax
