Whenever I think of churros, I think of theme parks. It’s almost a must to get churros to snack on whenever I head to theme parks. The crispy, golden brown sticks of goodness covered in cinnamon and sugar are just so satisfying.
However, I can’t always head to theme parks whenever I have a churros craving. Lucky for me, I can always head to Chulove Cafe in VivoCity. This cafe serves up sweet and savoury churros that are sure to satisfy that craving.
Chulove Cafe is well-lit with warm lights, and had a variety of seating including wooden stools and sofas. Across the seating area is their open kitchen where you can watch the staff fry the churros upon order.
Initially, Chulove Cafe only offered long churro sticks. However, after getting feedback from customers that it’s difficult to share the long sticks, they are now offering mini churros in a cup for sharing.
With so many different flavours available, I decided to get one of each of their Signature Churros (S$3 each), which includes Marshmallow, Rainbow Sprinkles, Peanuts, Coconuts and Pistachio.
Both the Marshmallow and Rainbow Sprinkles came with a chocolate base, which made them quite sweet. These two churros are suitable for the younger kids, but watch out for the sugar rush.
I’m not really a big fan of peanuts or coconut flakes, so I can’t really say much about it. The peanuts added an extra crunch and fragrance to the churros, but they came in bigger chunks that were quite messy to eat.
The Coconut Flakes churros came with a generous amount of coconut flakes with a tropical fragrance that was a little overwhelming for me.
What really got me excited was the Pistachio churros. Instead of a chocolate base like the other four, this churro was coated in white chocolate and covered with finely ground pistachios that covered every inch of the snack. The saltiness from the pistachios helped to balance out the sweet white chocolate, making it easy to snack on — this might just be my new love!
Chulove Cafe also offers classic Mini Churros (S$3.20/medium, S$3.90/large). These come with a complimentary sauce, and extra toppings for S$1. I added their Matcha foam and Crema Catalana foam as the extra topping.
According to their head chef, they mix whipped cream and cream cheese to get the right consistency so that the foam will stay in shape and remain light in flavour, so it didn’t overpower the sauce and churros.
What intrigued me was the Crema Catalana foam: a Spanish custard which is very similar to creme brûlée. The Crema Catalana foam at Chulove Cafe included lemon and orange zest for a citrusy flavour, with hints of floral notes.
If all that sweetness is a bit too much for you, they also have Savoury Churro Sandwiches (S$5.90). The flavours include Salmon & Sour Cream, Tuna & Avocado, and Turkey Ham & Cheese.
With a crispy churro “bun” giving a nice balance between sweet and savoury, this unique combination is a refreshing change from the usual deli sandwiches.
If you’re heading down to VivoCity anytime soon, give Chulove Cafe a try. The golden crispy churro goodness will get you hooked!
