What would you expect a ramen hawker business to branch out into? Maybe another stall with similar Japanese fare like donburi or even its close counterpart in Korean cuisine. Instead, Mr Ramen has forayed into more domestic territory — Chicken Rice. Aptly named Fat Chick, this new venture took over the Mr Ramen outlet at 177 Toa Payoh Central on 2 Oct.
Some have speculated on Facebook that business at Toa Payoh Payoh Central’s Mr Ramen outlet had been poor, and that could explain this transition to selling chicken rice.
Another Mr Ramen branch at K88 Kopitiam in Chinatown closed on 28 Sep, leaving just 1 outlet which opened earlier in 2023 at Seletar Road. No announcement was made on their Facebook page regarding the closure.

The chain was covered extensively by media last year for its truffle and laksa ramen with “no MSG or salt added”, according to their website.
Unlike the more ambitious offerings of its predecessor, Fat Chick totes a standard range of chicken rice — Chicken with Rice (S$4), Chicken Thigh with Rice (S$4.50) and Chicken Drumstick with Rice (S$5.50). Each plate was accompanied by a bowl of soup. If you’re looking for a fried option, they also have Lemon Chicken Cutlet with Rice (S$4.50).
Sharing portions are the usual Half Chicken (S$15) and Whole Chicken (S$30).
If you need something more filling, add on sides like Braised Egg (S$0.70), Braised Tau Kwa (S$0.70), and Chicken Liver & Gizzard (S$0.60). Consider Beansprouts (S$3) and Xiao Bai Cai (S$3) for greens.
With this swap from ramen to chicken rice, Toa Payoh residents now have chicken and duck rice cravings (Shun Feng Roasted Delights) covered at Bee Hwa Yun Kopitiam.
