Japanese Curry Express will soon join the sadly ever-expanding list of defunct affordable eateries. The renowned diner on the third floor of Fortune Centre will cease operations on 12 Aug 2023.
Despite the name of their business, Japanese Curry Express is widely known for serving up thick slabs of Salmon Sashimi (5 pcs for S$16), in contrast to the thinner cuts typically served elsewhere. Their generous portions draw massive crowds during lunch hour so queues are quite common.
Nevertheless, loyal customers have no power over surging rent costs, and it’s for this reason that the Japanese joint has announced its closure.
Interestingly, their Ebi Mango Maki (S$13) has remained a popular dish. The rice comes wrapped in nori with fried ebi at the centre, topped off by a small slice of mango garnished with tobiko and a drizzle of Japanese mayonnaise. A quick browse through Japanese Curry Express’s reviews paints it as a crowd favourite, with many complimenting the delectable combination.

It is quite inconceivable for anyone to miss out on karaage at a Japanese eatery. Unfortunately, while the less common Tako Karaage (S$7.50) has all the hallmarks to give you a sinfully good time, it is held back by portion size. Thankfully, you can make that up with their Pork Katsu Curry Rice (S$8.50). The katsu comes with a full plate of thick, pleasantly spiced curry and a small helping of pickles for a palate cleanser. The restaurant also serves Chawanmushi (S$13) as a main dish. Sounds more like a food challenge to me!
For a diner with ‘curry’ in its name, they sure have served way more than just that for 10 years.
If you’ve never been to Japanese Curry Express, head down to Fortune Centre before it eventually closes on 12 Aug.
