Located at Tajai Borneo, the Johor eatery serves Sarawak-style kolo mee alongside other Bornean favourites. Some locals consider it one of the better places around Gelang Patah for a halal version of the noodle dish.

You can choose your preferred kolo mee topping, with Kolok Ayam at RM10, Kolok Daging at RM11.50, or Kolok Special at RM16.50, which comes with both chicken and beef.

Its Special Kolok Mee is tossed with Sarawak soy sauce and topped with a mix of beef and chicken slices, minced chicken and fried shallots. A bowl comes with homemade wonton soup on the side. The kolo mee is also available in white, soy sauce or red versions, so you can customise according to your preferences.

Another must-try is Sarawak Laksa, topped with shredded chicken, prawns and strips of omelette. It is made using the owner’s wife’s recipe, which gives the dish a more homestyle feel. Prices range from RM12.50 for Laksa Biasa to RM16 for the Laksa Special, with Laksa Pattaya (RM13.50) and Laksa Kolo Mee at (RM14) in between.

For something lighter, Wantan Soup with Fishball is priced at RM8. There are also Bornean dishes such as Kuih Penyaram (RM1.50 per piece), Set Linut/Ambuyat, Set Kapurung and Set Mee Sapi, although availability may vary, with some items listed as weekend-only.

It is a no-frills spot worth keeping in mind when a comforting bowl of noodles is all you need. If you have been missing Sarawakian flavours or simply want to try halal kolo mee in Johor, Tajai Borneo makes for an easy place to start.
