Beloved founder of Nam Seng Wonton Noodles hawker stall passes away at 94

The well-loved founder and store-runner of the popular hawker stall Nam Seng Wonton Noodles, Mdm Leong Yuet Meng, has unfortunately passed away at the age of 94.

Nam Seng Wonton Noodles made the announcement via their Facebook page on 7 Feb. Meanwhile, her obituary was posted on the Facebook group Hawkers United – Dabao 2020 on the same day by the group’s founder, Melvin Chew. According to the obituary, Mdm Leong’s wake will be held from 7 to 8 Feb, and her funeral procession will take place on 9 Feb.

Mdm Leong, affectionately known as Ah Po, first operated Nam Seng Wonton Noodles with her late husband in 1962 as a way to survive Singapore’s early years of development. The initial stall was located at the original National Library Canteen along Stamford Road.

Over the years, for 6 days a week, Mdm Leong would consistently wake up before the crack of dawn to prepare her food. Her hard work and dedication has made Nam Seng Wonton Noodles a beloved brand that has garnered a significant number of fans.

Mdm Leong would whip up classic hawker dishes like wonton noodles, fried rice, hor fun, soy sauce chicken noodles and sui gao (dumplings) at her stall.

Nam Seng Wonton Noodles was previously located in the Central Business District (CBD) within Far East Square, but shut in 2020. The stall then relocated to Toa Payoh North in 2022, where Mdm Leong continued to serve hungry customers.

News of Mdm Leong’s passing was met with hundreds of comments on social media mourning the loss of this iconic figure in the local hawker scene. Many fans paid their condolences, while others thanked her for supplying them with her delicious and nostalgic noodles.
