Penang’s beloved Ais Tingkap has finally touched down in Johor Bahru and the nostalgia is almost sweet enough to taste.

A century-old Chowrasta Market favourite has journeyed south, carrying with it a history that stretches back to 1919 when a rose–hued sherbet first won over passersby on a busy Penang street. Those who grew up there will remember the scenery well.
Glasses were once handed out through a small window (“tingkap” in Malay) with crowds standing shoulder to shoulder for a sip of cool relief.
Some say that is how the name Ais Tingkap was born: a drink passed through a window to a line of thirsty regulars who never stopped returning. The scene is a little different now, yet the spirit remains.

Today, the legacy is safeguarded by Mohamed Asri and his brothers — custodians of a recipe that has weathered time, trend and taste. They have kept the core intact while refining the craft with a gentle hand — never too modern and never too far from what made it special.
What began as a humble refreshment has grown into a culinary heirloom, now poured fresh at B5 Johor Street Market. And yes, the flavour still hits just as it did at Chowrasta.

The star remains the iconic Ais Tingkap, an icy, rose-scented elixir layered with basil seeds, fresh coconut water and soft curls of coconut that dissolve like tropical confetti, among other ingredients.
But there is more to enjoy here. Alongside the famed drink are comforting Malaysian classics like Cendol, ABC (shaved ice), and Penang–style Mee Goreng. Slightly spicy, tangy, and a little messy in the most delicious way — best enjoyed hot before washing it all down with the vibrant refreshments.
Johor Bahru now gets to taste what generations before have cherished. Not merely a beverage, but a living story that travelled from Chowrasta’s heritage-lined streets to Johor’s lively marketplace. Make sure to visit Penang Ais Tingkap soon to beat JB’s hot weather!
