While we were all staying safe at home, unbeknownst to many, there were a handful of restaurants who braved the pandemic and pushed on with their plans of opening. Some also opened just as we broke into Phase 2, when dining out was permitted.
One of them is Pratunam Famous Chicken And Pork Leg Rice in Geylang. It sure is a mouthful to say, but I can assure you, their dishes are worth spreading the word to your friends.
In all my years, I’d never made a trip to Geylang specifically to eat at any of its coffeeshops—even for the more famous ones that tout the best frog leg porridge. That very quickly changed when I heard that this coffeeshop stall literally just opened weeks ago and they even sell a Jay Fai-inspired crab omelette which requires you to order in advance.
I was mildly disappointed to discover that only when I’d arrived at Pratunam Famous Chicken And Pork Leg Rice, but nevertheless, I still went ahead and ordered some of their other notable dishes.
If you have to order just a single dish here, it’d have to be their star, Pratunam Chicken And Pork Leg Rice Combo (S$8). I should’ve split the portion into two and got one portion for takeaway, because it was served in a bowl large enough for a soup noodle dish! If that’s not getting your money’s worth, I don’t know what is.
I could barely make out which parts were chicken, pork leg or rice as it was a mountain of food that was peppered with an even more generous layer of fried shallots. I mixed all the ingredients together, and a comforting aroma of savoury pork and warm rice pulled me in.
I was low-key mind-blown by how flavourful every spoonful was, regardless of whether I ate a combination of rice and pork, or rice and chicken, or just the rice as is. There were nuances of white pepper, soya sauce, and vinegar all muddled throughout the dish.
What impressed me most was the tenderness of both the pork and chicken; nothing in this bowl was plain nor dry. Not even the rice.
Since there were two of us, my dining partner ordered the Pratunam Crabmeat Fried Rice (S$14.90). I was definitely impressed by the large chunks of sweet crab meat that littered the bed of rice—and it came in the same immense portion as mine.
The white pepper taste was pronounced and the rice was very well-seasoned. Even for a dish so simple, my dining partner managed to polish off his bowl much faster than I could mine. If you’re unable to get your hands on their Pratunam Crab Omelette, this is certainly the next best option.
I initially wanted to order their seemingly popular Tok Mun Pla (fish cakes), but they were already sold out. Instead, I went with BBQ Squid (S$5.90 for three). For some reason, I was already lowering the bar before I’d even tried it—how impressive can barbecued squid be?
Well, get ready to be swept off your feet because these were impeccably soft, with minimal chewing required. My dining partner and I were mind-boggled as to how they’d managed to get the squid so soft.
Another highlight was their homemade chilli—it sure packed a punch, but it also packed plenty of flavour. I could both taste and smell the green chillies and there was also a mild sweetness that kept me going back for more squid.
I know there’s already the safe bet of heading to Go-Ang Pratunam Chicken Rice, but you might want to reconsider heading down to Geylang and supporting this newly-opened humble stall that will very soon see great success.
I’ve only been here once, but I cannot wait to return. And next time, I’ll be sure to pre-order their Pratunam Crab Omelette.
