Craving for a piping hot bowl of congee? Luckily for you, we have found just the place.

In Singapore, frog porridge is ranked as one of the top go-to comfort food during a rainy day. While some might resent the thought of eating frogs, I have to say these odd-looking amphibians are worth a try and they are best savoured when braised in a savoury-sweet pool of dark soy sauce and accompanied by a pot of thick, starchy congee.

G7 Live Seafood Restaurant Flatlay

I chanced upon G7 Live Seafood Restaurant on the Hawkers United Facebook group and the thought of having some savoury, tender frog legs onto my thick, starchy porridge sounded heavenly. Located in Geylang, the humble stall is known for its frog porridge while also serving up seafood fare such as chilli crab and other zi char dishes.

While I came for the iconic dish, I couldn’t resist trying some of their mouth-watering zi char dishes. In contrary to the reviews expressing long waiting hours and unresponsive replies, the ordering process was a breeze for me. I was required to fill up an order form and my order was swiftly processed in 10 minutes, with the food delivered in an hour.

I landed myself with some of their best sellers—Dried Chilli Frog (S$25), Plain Porridge (S$6 for two portions), Marmite Pork Ribs (S$18) and Fu Rong Egg (S$10).

G7 Live Seafood Restaurant Frog Leg

The Dried Chilli Frog was delightful delish, tender frog legs were swimming in an umami-packed gravy topped with a fistful of chopped spring onions. The rich gravy was satisfyingly gratifying, possessing a nice smokiness flavour and packing just the right amount of heat.

The frog legs were plump,  silky soft and tender, leaving me clamouring for more.

G7 Live Seafood Porridge

The dish alone is incomplete without an accompanying pot of thick, starchy congee. Silky, smooth and slightly peppery, I enjoyed slathering my porridge with the piquant gravy. Take my advice and spoon the lusciously rich dark sauce onto your thick, starchy porridge for added flavour! This combination is an embodiment of a match made in heaven.

G7 Live Seafood Restaurant Fu Yong Egg

Surely, you can’t have porridge without some eggs. The Fu Rong Egg is a Chinese-style omelette and for this particular variant, vegetables and prawns were nestled within. Fluffy with crispy edges, it was lightly seasoned and paired immaculately with the congee.

G7 Live Seafood Restaurant Marmite Pork

The Marmite Pork Ribs is definitely worth a mention—just look at that glossy and glistering marmite glaze. The dish features gorgeous crispy ribs coated in a thick sticky, sweet and savoury glaze. The ribs were tender to bite, though they leaned towards the slightly fattier side. The pork ribs were further enhanced by its sweet-savoury glaze to create this sticky, finger-licking ribs with just the right full-mouth feel.

All in all, nothing beats a warm bowl of porridge and the sizzling fragrance of tender frog legs. Especially during this ‘Circuit Breaker’ period where one might feel gloomy, fend off your COVID-19 gloom with a belly comforting bowl of porridge and other zi char dishes from G7 Live Seafood Restaurant. I am so glad I need not travel all the way to indulge in some immensely heartwarming dishes.
