Quick Summary

Soon Soon Huat Curry Puff on East Coast Road centres on handmade curry puffs, chee cheong fan and chwee kueh, with attention to flavour, texture and changes since its former Kim Tian Road days, including a milder spice level and an expanded menu. Useful for people seeking traditional Singapore breakfast fare near Marine Parade MRT, it appears best suited to those who value old-school dishes and nostalgia over novelty.

As a child, I faintly remember visiting a coffeeshop nearby for breakfast every weekend. We would often visit a stall called Soon Soon Huat Curry Puff, where my mum would eat their curry puff while my brother, dad and I would have their chee cheong fan.

After some time, my family stopped visiting that place, and I asked my dad why. “Oh, that’s because they shifted to East Coast Rd. It’s too far away for us,” he said.

Recently, I began to miss the chee cheong fan there. While I did not fully remember its taste, I hoped that eating it again would bring back memories of my childhood. So, I decided to visit the stall at East Coast with my parents.

What to order at Soon Soon Huat Curry Puff

When looking at the menu, we were immediately drawn to the items we came for. We ordered their Signature Curry Puff (S$2.50) and 2 sets of Chee Cheong Fan (S$3.50 per plate). As my dad prefers his chee cheong fan plain, the second plate came without the sweet sauce.

Besides our go-to items, my mum ordered their Chwee Kueh (S$3.80), which wasn’t available at the previous Kim Tian Rd stall. Looks like they expanded their menu!

Despite visiting the stall multiple times as a child, I was guilty of never having tried their signature item before. So when the food arrived, I knew that was the first thing I had to try.

Based on looks alone, Soon Soon Huat’s curry puff already stands out with its layers of swirls. Different from your typical Old Chang Kee curry puff. Of course, I don’t just judge based on looks, but also on taste.

It was love at first bite. The flaky crust melted in my mouth, and while I often feel an ick after a few bites of fried food, I didn’t feel that way when eating their curry puff.

The filling was very generous, and I enjoyed the texture of small cubes of egg within. How could I have missed out on this for so long?

While I expected myself to chug huge amounts of water to battle the spice, the heat was surprisingly manageable. Later, I learnt that the spice level was lowered to cater to people with low tolerance like me. No wonder!

Next up was my childhood favourite: the chee cheong fan. Previously, when I had a sweet tooth, the chee cheong fan’s sweet sauce was perfect for me. Although I’ve grown to appreciate milder tastes, I still enjoyed the chee cheong fan. Its sweet sauce and silky rice were simply nostalgic!

I also had a bite of my dad’s favourite plain chee cheong fan. Even without the sweet sauce, the chee cheong fan remained flavourful with the light soya sauce and sesame fragrance.

Finally, I had a taste of the chwee kueh, and noticed both the sweet and savoury taste of the chai poh (dried radish). The rice cake had a smooth and moist texture, with its plain flavour complementing the chai poh.

My parents also praised the dish for having more chai poh and less oil compared to other chwee kueh stalls.

When discussing our favourite dishes, all 3 of us had different conclusions. I was torn between the curry puff and the 2 plates of chee cheong fan. While I enjoyed the silkiness of the chee cheong fan, I also loved the flakiness of the curry puff and the flavourful, mildly spicy filling.

Meanwhile, my mum enjoyed the chwee kueh the most for its balanced sweet and savoury taste. And my dad, of course, awarded the best dish title to his go-to plain chee cheong fan.

I can't cook, but I can eat and tell you if the food is good. I love almost everything that goes with coriander, spring onions or vinegar, but absolutely hate ginger and garlic.
