Three Kingdoms Mala Hotpot has a new challenge— this time featuring an all-time favourite: mala.

It is the Devil King Mala Challenge and even the name sounds ferocious! It runs from 1 June to 31 August 2022, and the restaurant is located at Bukit Merah Central.

Mala is a Sichuan cuisine notable for the spices and chilli found in it, which usually include Sichuan peppercorn and chilli. If you see bowls of red hot chilli oil with uncountable floating chilli on its surface, which is akin to looking into the fiery depths of hell… you’ve chanced upon mala. Despite its fiery taste, Singaporeans such as myself love it as it is delicious and aromatic.

Three Kingdoms Mala Hotpot’s usual menu has five different levels of spice: level 1,2,3,5 and 10. So far, only a few have been able to stomach the level 10 mala.

Three Kingdoms Mala Hotpot’s formidable challenge is to finish a bowl of level 10 mala spiciness worth S$38.80 in 45 minutes for a solo challenger, and 20 minutes for dual challengers.

The level 10 mala contains peppercorn oil, which is included to overcome the issue of biting into the Sichuan peppercorns. This keeps the classic numbness of mala spice without the issue of having an inflamed tongue.

This challenge can only be done when dining-in, on weekdays from 6pm to 10pm, and on weekends and public holidays from 11am to 10pm.

The catch is challengers cannot drink, use napkins, or wipe their faces during the challenge. So be prepared to be dripping with sweat and have one’s mouth burning hot with no respite. However, if you do brave the challenge, you get the challenge fee waived and get your name on Three Kingdoms Mala Hotpot’s hall of fame. Additionally, challengers must be 21 years old or older.
