If you’d asked any Toa Payoh resident, “Which laksa stall has the biggest hums?” They will likely point you to the vacant spot at Yi Hao Coffeeshop. Yes, we are talking about the famous Toa Payoh 94 Laksa that has relocated to Whampoa Drive.

How famous? Let’s jog your memory. Prior to the stall’s final day of operation (at its former location) on 13 Jul, the public has seen hordes of customers queuing up for hearty bowls of spicy goodness.

With nearly 300 bowls of laksa churned out daily, it’s no surprise that this crowd-favourite is frequently sold out before noon

Today’s laksa situation at 11.30am. No chance to eat haha. Lady boss came to the back of the queue to tell us ‘sold out’,” a netizen from Toa Payoh Makan Places – Your Toa Payoh & Balestier Food Guide shared.

Well, here’s your chance now.

For further context: Aside from operating hae mee, cai png and zi char stalls, the owner of Toa Payoh 94 Laksa, used to manage the previous kopitiam that housed his businesses. However, he decided to relocate after a change of hands which led to high rental fees. Only 2 of his stalls – laksa and hae mee, are at the new location.

Having been around for less than 2 years, the first is a relatively new stall. Conversely, the latter was established over 20 years ago. According to another member of the same Facebook Group, both joints reopened on 17 Jul!

Bringing your attention back to that highly-raved noodle dish which has an old-school charm from the 1970s, be relieved to know that the prices at Whampoa Drive remain the same. Coming in hearty S$5 and S$6 portions, the rich laksa features umami-laden gravy yielded from briny stock.

As for the ingredients, say goodbye to your minuscule cockles.

On top of the usual halved prawn, tau pok, tau geh and chu mi fen, these jumbo blood cockles (aka hums) are freshly shucked in-store.

Plump yet juicy, the bivalves are renowned for being bigger than a S$0.50 coin! If this regular size doesn’t impress you enough, opt to add on S$1 for its giant-sized counterpart. Alternatively, top up S$2 for more hums
