And so continues my afternoon tea adventures, continuing from Tarte last week. This time, a real treat hails from famed HK-styled cha chaan teng Tsui Wah, with their all-new Tsui Wah Signature Afternoon Tea Set. Available exclusively at their Clarke Quay outlet, the tea set has diners like me in mind—lovers of all things savoury and umami.

A spread of offerings at Tsui Wah's afternoon tea, including a cup of milk tea, noodle bowls, and bottled milk tea in a bucket

All sets come with Deep Fried Wantons (4pcs) with Sweet and Sour Sauce, Deep Fried Chicken Wing (1pc), Savoury French Toast Bites (4pcs) with Condensed Milk, as well as a choice of two drinks from Yuen Yueng, Milk Tea, Coffee, Coffee with Condensed Milk, and Tea with Condensed Milk.

The difference between each set is that on top of the aforementioned menu items, Set A (S$18.80++ for two pax) also comes with a bowl of King Prawn in XO Sauce with Tossed Noodles and Kagoshima-Style Braised Pork Cartilage in Fish Soup with Mixian, while Set B (S$14.80++ for two pax) presents Luncheon Meat and Scrambled Egg Sandwiches (4 quarter pcs) and French Fries instead.

The savoury french toast bites are a splendid surprise coated in crispy batter, and very much different from the typical iteration of the dish which I usually find a tad too sweet for my liking. If you’re torn between the two sets, I’d say make that S$4 upgrade to Set A because the two bowls of noodles are more than worth your while.

Overlay of tea time offerings

The dry XO sauce noodles make for a flavourful tea-time snack while the fish soup mixian is comfort on a rainy afternoon. Of course, one of the best parts of a cha chaan teng meal is the Hong Kong-style milk tea that awaits.

And exactly in tea house fashion, the cold milk tea and milk yuen yueng at Tsui Wah are bottled and served in an ice bucket, a clever way to keep your beverages icy cold without diluting them. I don’t care what people have to say about a giant bucket on my table—it gets the job done and that’s all that matters. Diners can top up S$1.50 to their set to enjoy the cold bottled drinks.

After all that’s been raved about the afternoon tea set, the best part is that it can be enjoyed at home too. It’s not only available in-store, but also for takeout, so you can decide what view you’ll get to savour your dim sum in front of (even if it’s the TV screen, with Disney+ playing).
