Coffee lovers, heads up! Unity Coffee is a new specialty coffee shop that just opened up in the Kovan heartlands.
Run by award-winning latte artists who have been in the specialty coffee industry for many years now, the takeaway-only cafe serves a good variety of drinks.
There’s the usual espresso, latte and brewed coffee for coffee connoisseurs, but that’s not all. They have non-caffeinated drinks available for the masses as well.
Their signature BLCK Latte (S$6) intrigued us with one particular ingredient used in it— activated charcoal powder. As such, true to its name, the BLCK Latte was soot-black in colour.
As a latte enthusiast, I appreciated how smooth and creamy the drink was. The latte had a strong yet soothing bitterness that was complemented by a subtle sweetness. I felt super zen as I sipped on it.
The friendly baristas also recommended the Spanish Latte (S$6), which comes with added condensed milk.
I reckon those of you who like your coffee on the sweeter side of life will enjoy this. That said, as a purist, I still preferred the rich bitterness of the BLCK Latte.
Nonetheless, the latte arts were picture-perfect. I couldn’t help but gaze in awe as the baristas worked their magic with their unbelievably steady hands.
We got some of their coffee-free drinks to try too, such as their Chocolate (S$6) drink which features 50% Cacao from the Dominican Republic.
Matcha lovers can try their Kyoto Uji Matcha Latte (S$6.50) as well, which they make to order like all their drinks. You can watch the baristas whisk the matcha for some sound therapy as you’re waiting, as such.
Apart from drinks, Unity Coffee also serves a small selection of food items, such as sandwiches! The Hot Stuff (S$8.50) features an enormous piece of Korean-style spicy grilled chicken layered with purple cabbage and a sunny-side up. Everything is packed in a toasted baguette, including their spicy homemade secret sauce.
My personal favourite was the B’heese (S$9), which I fathom is meant to sound like ‘beast’, and for good reason.
In the baguette this time were generous portions of sliced beef and decadent caramelised onions. Amalgamating everything together was white cheese which they melt using a blowtorch. Topped with an egg, it was quite a mess to eat— a beautiful and sinfully delicious one, that is.
We also tried the Cheese Out (S$7) which is Unity Coffee’s take on a grilled cheese. The sandwich contained not one, not two, but three types of cheese— mozzarella, gouda and cheddar.
It also had caramelised onions, all packed between two slices of softly crisp brioche toast. Every oozy bite we took made us want to go in for another mouthful.
With such great coffee and interesting food options at comparably affordable prices, this little cosy and minimalist cafe in Kovan has the approval of the coffee addict in me. I can definitely see myself visiting Unity Coffee regularly for my coffee fix from now on!
