Quick Summary

Wooloomooloo Steakhouse at Swissotel The Stamford is reviewed through a full meal covering appetisers, premium steaks and desserts, with particular praise for the Mayura chocolate-fed Wagyu rib eye and F1 Wagyu striploin. Located a short walk from City Hall MRT, it is positioned as a higher-end dining option suited to special occasions, offering city views, attentive service and a broad menu that leaves diners well satisfied.

What’s a perk of working at SETHLUI.com? Of course, it’s feasting on good food for free. Recently, I was invited to visit Wooloomooloo Steakhouse, which ranks number 1 on our best steaks listicle. Being presented with such a rare opportunity, I knew I couldn’t miss out.

wooloomooloo steakhouse - exterior

Located on Level 3 of Swissotel The Stamford, the restaurant was difficult (for me) to find. After 5 minutes of circling around, I finally found it and was welcomed into the spacious restaurant. Boasting huge glass panels and a spacious interior, the restaurant emits a luxurious and stylish feel.

What to order at Wooloomooloo Steakhouse

wooloomooloo steakhouse - yellowfin tuna tartare

We soon commenced our meal with a range of appetisers. My absolute favourite was the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare (S$35++). Decorated with fish roe, tempura and cucumber, the dish was a vibrant mix of colours.

I took a bite and was impressed by the harmonious contrast in texture. While the plate contained soft pieces of diced tuna, the crunchy fish roe, tempura and cucumber enhanced the dish with a delectable crunch.

Surprisingly, there wasn’t a pungent tuna flavour. Instead, I detected a mild spice from the aioli, a creamy sauce made with garlic and oil.

wooloomooloo steakhouse - australian wagyu carpaccio

Another dish I recommend is the Australian Wagyu Carpaccio (S$31++). The pink beef was cut into fine slices, creating a melt-in-the-mouth texture which won me over. The meat is also leaner, making it suitable for health-conscious meat lovers.

The dish was coated with a layer of tonnato, a white sauce consisting of mayonnaise, lemon juice and anchovies. Balancing the creamy, fishy flavour were the pickled onions, which added some sweetness to the beef. Good combination!

After completing our appetisers, it was time for the star of the day. Yes, steak time!

Soon, 3 huge pieces of steak were delivered to our table, along with multiple types of sauces, mustard, salt and side dishes to accompany them.

wooloomooloo steakhouse - usda prime cajun rib eye

First up was a 340g serving of medium-rare USDA Prime Cajun Rib Eye (S$99++). Accompanied by a well-seasoned exterior, the beefy taste was enhanced with a smoky, savoury flavour. Texture-wise, the meat was mostly tender, except for the tendons, which were more chewy.

Personally, I’m not a fan of meat because of the gaminess that sometimes comes with it. However, the steak here has a cleaner taste that will keep me coming back for more.

wooloomooloo steakhouse - mayura station chocolate fed full blood wagyu rib eye

Next, we had the 340g medium Mayura Station Chocolate Fed Full Blood Wagyu Rib Eye (S$160++), which stood out for its melt-in-the-mouth texture. Despite being served medium, the Mayura Wagyu was the juiciest out of the 3 steaks. It was also the most tender and had the longest finish. No wonder 2 out of 4 of us picked this as our favourite!

When reading the menu, I was intrigued to see that the Mayura Wagyu is chocolate-fed. Were the cows actually fed with chocolate? We asked the chef and it turns out that the cows are fed chocolate-flavoured grains before slaughter — this enhances the fattiness of the meat. No wonder the meat was so juicy.

wooloomooloo steakhouse - f1 wagyu striploin

Finally, we had the 340g medium-rare F1 Wagyu Striploin (S$109++). While I also enjoyed the other 2 steaks, this was my favourite. The steak also had more lean meat, achieving a good balance between tender and leaner meat.

After the appetisers and steak, our stomachs were really full. But we know there’s always a second stomach, so it was dessert time!

wooloomooloo steakhouse - bread & butter pudding

Of the 3 desserts served to us, I enjoyed the Bread & Butter Pudding (S$14++) most. Given its simple name, I didn’t expect something impressive, but was wowed first by the artful decorations on the plate.

The bread pudding was extremely moist, with a wonderful buttery fragrance. Dip it in the pool of caramel and vanilla custard sauce, and you’ll be indulged by its richness and creaminess. For a good contrast, you could also pair the warm bread pudding with the cold ice cream.

I can't cook, but I can eat and tell you if the food is good. I love almost everything that goes with coriander, spring onions or vinegar, but absolutely hate ginger and garlic.
