Baguette Huong Viet is a quaint banh mi stall in Maxwell Food Centre that has delighted its loyal supporters with hearty and authentic Vietnamese fare for years.

It offers 6 kinds of banh mi, as well as a vast selection of other Vietnamese favourites, such as pho, vermicelli noodles and spring rolls. Each dish is affordably priced, with all mains coming in at under S$8.

What I tried at Baguette Huong Viet

The first thing I tried was the stall’s signature Traditional Bánh Mì (S$6.50), filled with 3 types of Vietnamese ham, chicken floss, chicken pate, Vietnamese mayonnaise, assorted veggies and pickled salad.

The amount of fillings within the banh mi was pretty adequate, with there being a good portion of thick Vietnamese ham and vegetables. The ham had a mild yet meaty taste, while the veggies were delightfully crunchy and fresh. The baguette had been toasted right before being served, making it extra crispy and delightful. Unfortunately, the chicken floss aspect was not very prominent, though there was a small amount of it to amplify the sweetness of the baguette.

This wasn’t the most mind-blowing banh mi I’ve had, but for the price and the portion, I’d say that it was pretty satisfying.

Next up was the Beef Noodle Soup (Pho) (S$7.50), consisting of flat noodles, white onions and topped with a generous amount of chives.

The soup was very flavourful and slightly sweet. I liked how it wasn’t too salty or overwhelming, and it acted as a comforting and tasty base for the other elements.

Though the amount of beef within was not all that generous, the beef slices were pretty tender and went well with the sauces served on the side.

The flat noodles were soft and silky while the onions provided an extra bit of crunch to amplify the dish. Admittedly, it tasted like most other pho I’ve had, but it was delicious enough to stave off my pho cravings.

baguette huong viet - grilled pork vermicelli with spring rolls

If you prefer your noodles dry, the Grilled Pork Vermicelli with Spring Rolls (S$7) at Baguette Huong Viet is for you. This wholesome dish came with vermicelli noodles, chopped pickled vegetables, fresh veggies, coriander, pork sausage and spring rolls.

A tub of sweet and sour sauce was served on the side— I poured it into the noodles and gave it a good mix, which allowed for the bright orange sauce to coat the ingredients evenly.

Each bite of the Grilled Pork Vermicelli with Spring Rolls was texturally exciting— the assortment of crisp veggies, chopped carrots and radishes added a bit of crunch to the otherwise soft vermicelli noodles.

I really liked the spring roll pieces within the dish. The exterior of the spring rolls was very crispy and light while the fillings were earthy and yammy. These tasted just like zi char yam rings, which I love.

The pork sausages were thick and chewy with a nice savoury and slightly salty taste. The meaty flavours of the pork complemented the lighter, sweeter flavours of the vermicelli and vegetables. All in all, this was a really satisfying and healthy dish, perfect for those looking to up their fibre intake for the day.

Final thoughts

baguette huong viet - dishes

Baguette Huong Viet offered a pretty delectable range of dishes that managed to satisfy my various Vietnamese food cravings. The prices at this stall were quite reasonable for the portion sizes, although there wasn’t much that differentiated it from other authentic Vietnamese stalls I’ve visited in the past.

Baguette Huong Viet is definitely a stall I would frequent if I worked near Maxwell Food Centre. Don’t hesitate to give it a go the next time you’re in the city!
