I came across a post on Facebook one day, and it was mentioned there was a bakery named Baker Talent in front of Kang Kar Mall in Hougang that had buns for just S$1.

There was a wide variety of types available and another commenter shared that the bakes were decent for the price, as long as you “don’t expect a lot of fillings”. I love a good deal on bread, so I grabbed my trusty flip-flops and headed down to investigate.

Baker Talent is situated right in front of the NTUC Fairprice. The buns eligible for the S$1 offer are displayed in a large case out front. I wasn’t sure if all of the bread inside was part of the deal due to the varying price tags, but I asked the friendly auntie and she confirmed that yes, every single baked item inside the case was only a dollar. There are at least a dozen varieties of bread available, so you can’t really say there’s “no choice”.

I picked up a total of 5 different buns. All of them were roughly the same size and shape, and felt quite nice and soft despite looking a bit squished.

baker talent - apple cheese

First up is the Apple Cheese bun. The bread is incredibly soft, but not exactly fluffy. As expected, the filling is negligible – there’s just a small schmear of cream cheese and probably maybe less than a tablespoon of apple filling. It wasn’t bad, but I’ve had better versions of this.

baker talent - chicken mushroom

The Chicken Mushroom was very yellow for some reason, and there was barely any chicken. It also tasted like a strange version of popiah filling with mushrooms inside. Pass.

baker talent - chicken puff

The Chicken Puff meanwhile, had chicken, though you could count the chunks on one hand. The vegetables were very hard, too. The filling at least resembled a chicken pot pie, taste-wise. Definitely better than the Chicken Mushroom.

tuna

The Tuna tasted like what you’d get from other neighbourhood bakeries, so no surprises there. As you can see, the amount of filling is… not a lot.

And finally, we have the Black Sesame. This bun surprised me because the amount of black sesame paste was quite decent, and distributed well throughout the bun. It didn’t really have a very strong flavour and tasted a little off, but for S$1, it’s good enough.

So… is it worth it? Yeah, it’s not terrible at all (minus the Chicken Mushroom which I really didn’t enjoy), and it’s very affordable bread. If you live in the Northeast area and need a bunch of buns, stop by Baker Talent to pick some up.
