Have you ever heard of the term, “same same but different”? When I decided to put together a hotpot list, many colleagues asked me what the distinction between steamboat and hotpot was. It’s the perfect situation of when that phrase comes into play.

Sure, both are communal dining options where family, friends, and colleagues (you get the gist) gather together to cook and enjoy a meal. Steamboat is influenced by Asian countries that involves a simple broth like chicken or vegetable, where the spotlight focuses on the ingredients’ natural flavour.
On the other hand, hotpot is instilled in Chinese tradition, showcasing bold flavoured broths like tomato, spicy Sichuan, among others. It often involves a dual-pot setup, with one side packing the heat. And with that, here’s a list of 11 must-try hotpot spots in Singapore for a shiok meal.

For your daily dose of protein with a twist, get the Pork & Beef Platter (pork belly & collar + beef tongue) (S$41.99). Don’t worry, non-meat eaters can enjoy the Seafood Platter (S$48.99). To round off your meal, you can also complement it with a Veggie Basket (S$15.99).

2. Guo Fu Hotpot

I used to be a regular in the past when Guo Fu Hotpot was still located at Cross Street. Now bigger and better, its Guoco Tower level 2 space is more spacious and comfortable. Each customer now has their own pot with a choice of over 14 soup bases at just S$6.90++ each.
Go for the chef recommendations and savour the Beauty Soup, Millet Golden Soup, or Male Vitality Soup. There’s also Kim Chi Soup, Curry Beef Soup, Elderly Tonic Soup, among others. 3. Zhou Ji Chuan Chuan Xiang 周记串串香

Zhou Ji Chuan Chuan Xiang, in the heart of Bugis along Tan Quee Lan Street, provides a wallet-friendly and satisfying hotpot experience. If you’re someone who adores hotpots and skewers, perfect. This place offers both!
The term ‘Chuan Chuan Xiang‘ (skewered fragrant hotpot) was originally established in Chengdu, Sichuan province in the 1980s. The idea is to present dishes on bamboo skewers to be cooked in a community hotpot.
This spot offers over 100 varieties of skewers, making it stand out. These feature a vast variety of meats, seafood, and veggies, all for an astoundingly modest S$0.25 per skewer.

My highlights include the tart Tomato Soup (S$14.80), the spicy numbing and staple Mala Soup (S$16.80), or the nourishing Chicken Soup (S$15.80) that incorporates an entire chicken to enrich the broth.
Need condiments to pair with your food? No problem! Simply spend another S$2 to be eligible for the sauces.
Best for: Budget-friendly hotpot
Price: Skewers from S$0.25; soup from S$14.80
4. Zi Bu Yang Sheng 滋补养生小火锅

Who says hotpot sessions can only by enjoyed at a restaurant? Well, whoever told you that has obviously not visited Zi Bu Yang Sheng 滋补养生小火锅. It’s a hawker stall situated on the second floor of Taman Jurong Food Centre that sells its set meals from just S$6.
Run solely by one gentleman, this hotpot place operates only during dinner time from 5.30pm to 10pm.

The menu has options like Mutton Set Meal (S$8), Chicken Set Meal (S$6.50), Beef Set Meal (S$8), and Pork Set Meal (S$6.50). Depending on your preference, you can enjoy it with soup flavours such as Spicy Mala, Tom Yam, Herbal, and normal Chicken.
Each set comes with your choice of protein, cabbage, Chinese spinach, enoki mushrooms, vermicelli, fish cake, sliced hot dog, cubes of luncheon meat, and a raw egg. Do note that Plain Rice isn’t provided, and I topped up $0.50 for it.
My personal favourite is their Herbal soup. It is incredibly pleasant and drinkable as it uses chicken stock, which gives it a natural sweet base. There’s also a mild earthy bitterness from the ginseng, and the rest of the herbs makes each spoonful fragrant and herbaceous.

8. Chuan Yang Ji 川羊记

Specialising in lamb hotpot, Chuan Yang Ji 川羊记 makes its broth fresh daily. This is done by slow simmering sheep bones for 6 hours, producing a slurp-worthy collagen soup base that packs a ton of health benefits.
This hotpot establishment originated in Balestier 16 years ago, and now has 2 other branches at Kallang and Chinatown. With just a top-up of S$2, customers can help themselves to unlimited servings of between 14 to 20 (depending on outlet) hotpot sauces, ice cream, and dessert.

Choose between the signature Lamb Collagen Soup (S$18), Spicy Lamb Spine Soup (S$28), Mala Spicy Butter Soup (S$10) and Matsutake Mushroom Soup (S$15).
I ordered their Scorpion Lamb Fragrant Set at S$59.90, which includes Spicy Lamb Spine Soup, Chinese Cabbage (150g), Lettuce (80g), Enoki Mushroom (100g), Black Fungus (80g), Shrimp Paste, Crab Stick, ChongQing Mouth-Watering Chicken, Homemade Slice Noodle/Japanese Pearl Rice, Snow Fungus With Rock Sugar/Ice Osmanthus Jelly With Brown Sugar and 2 Sour Plum Juices.

9. Haha Hotpot

Since most hotpot places around Singapore aren’t Halal-certified, Haha Hotpot that’s 100% Muslim-owned and utilises Halal-certified ingredients is one of the few available in Singapore. They guarantee that the taste and experience are indistinguishable to the tastes of acclaimed hotpot establishments.

I had such difficulty choosing from broth options such as Authentic Sichuan Mala (S$11.90), Seafood Soup (S$11.90), Spicy Collagen Soup (S$11.90) and Tomato Soup (S$11.90). Then I had to choose to pair it with tantalising meats like Wagyu Beef Slices (S$59.90), Lamb Slices (S$13.90), and Signature Beef Slices (S$11.90).
Those who love veggies in their hotpot like I do, can go for the Chinese Long Cabbage (S$3.90), Kang Kong (S$3.90), and Broccoli (S$3.90). I couldn’t resist ordering the Beancurd Roll (S$5.90), King Oyster Mushroom (S$3.90), and the Egg Tofu (S$1.90).
In case you’re bored of the classic Instant Noodles (90c) there’re more interesting choices like Squid Ink Noodles (S$3.90) and Fish Noodles (S$3.90).

10. Tiantai Hotpot

Tiantai Hotpot is an elusive place that’s clearly hidden from the public eye, unless you know of its existence. Yes, this Chongqing-style hotpot restaurant is located on the rooftop of People’s Park Complex and most importantly, doesn’t impost GST and service charge — yipee!
Take your pick from its 3 choices of soup bases: Spicy Red Oil (S$18), Mushroom (S$12), or Tomato (S$12). You can opt for the Individual Hotpot or Yin Yang Hotpot, depending on your preference. Head over to the condiments section to create your personalised dipping sauce, but don’t expect a wide variety, though.

For those like me who dislike dory because of its soft and lacklustre flavour, Tiantai Hotpot thankfully offers Sole Fish (S$3). Innard lovers must go for the Fresh Beef Tripe (S$9) and House Marinated Pork Intestine (S$9).
Under the meats section, you’ll find yummy options like US Beef Brisket (S$9), Spicy Chicken Slices (S$7), and Spain Black Pig Streaky Pork (S$20). Since this place only closes at midnight, it’s the perfect venue for people who love to chill till late.

After countless R&D and visits to global tomato farms, each pot of tomato broth is freshly stewed using 10 ripe tomatoes from Malaysia. Even their shrimp paste has received an upgrade, utilising fresh deep-sea tiger prawns that’s freshly prepared and pounded in their open-concept kitchen.

If the Signature Fresh Simmered Tomato Broth (S$6.90) isn’t your jam, there are other enticing varieties like Yunnan Wild Mushrooms Broth (S$7.90), Clam Seafood Broth (S$12.90), and Chong Qing Classic Tallow Spicy Broth (S$12.90).
