Mikkeller Singapore is not exactly the new kid on the block, though their outlet at Chinatown Complex Food Centre is. These cool cats used to operate at a shipping container at Deck on Prinsep Street; I know it doesn’t get anymore craft-beery than that. A move and a pandemic-induced closure later, this Copenhagen-based beer is back in the mecca that is Chinatown Complex Food Centre. After all, the craft beer scene in Singapore has been on the up and up, with bars like Almost Famous and Yeast Side, there is an unadulterated appreciation for craft beer.

Since their soft launch in the middle of January, craft beer enthusiasts have been flocking to Mikkeller Singapore for a pint of their famed Da.nish beer. Whether you like the wheaty pale ales or the dark, rich stouts, Mikkeller Singapore has got you covered.

Occupying one-half of the Smith Street Taps stalls (another slick craft beer joint), Mikkeller Singapore is where you can find 10 taps of rotating craft beers at your disposal.

I’m a quite a novice when it comes to craft beers, but the light and hazy gluten-free Space Race (S$16) has certainly caught my eye. This New England IPA comes with sparky notes of pineapple and bitter citrusy beats that is sure to be out of this world. This one does have a hefty ABV of 6.7%, but apparently, you don’t even feel it. All the more fun, I’d say.

Do you know what the best part about having a craft beer stall in the middle of a hawker centre is? All the delicious satay, plates of greasy char kway teow that will make excellent beer pairings. A velvety and rich Kaffestout (S$14) or even Mikkeller Bean Geek (S$15) porter is sure to complement all those smoky, charred flavours to a T.

There is something so utterly Singaporean about having craft beer in a cantankerous hawker centre with your humble plate of char kway teow.
