Simple stay-home recipe: Rabboki — from the Korean streets to your home

From the streets of Korea, is the love child of ramen and tteokbokki, rabboki. A cuter sounding name and truly the best of both worlds, rabboki allows you more variety as opposed to the normal tteokbokki treat and trust me, it’s way better.

The ingredient list might sound a little long, but if you have always had a thing for Korean food, that shouldn’t be a problem for you. Otherwise, all you have to do is pay a visit to the Korean store, and you’ll be set. Plus, is there anything more wonderful than the Korean store?

Ingredients

Instant noodles, tteokbokki, fish cake

Condiment and sauces for rabboki

  • 1 packet unflavoured ramen noodles
  • Half a portion of tteokbokki from the packet (or as much as desired)
  • 2 tbsp gochujang
  • 1 tbsp gochugaru
  • 1 dashi packet (Optional; you can just use water)
  • 1 tsp light soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp garlic paste
  • ½ onion, slice
  • A couple of sliced boiled eggs

Tools

  • Large saucepan
  • Cutting board
  • Knife

Recipe preparation

Cooking time: 30 minutes
Feeds  2 to 3

  • Place your gochujang, gochugaru, garlic paste, sugar, and soy sauce in a bowl and mix well.
  • Fill your saucepan with water, add your dashi packet and gochujang mixture, and bring to a boil.
  • Add onions and tteokbokki into the saucepan and cook until tteokbokki is soft.
  • Then, add in your ramen noodles.
  • When your noodles are at your desired doneness, add in your boiled eggs and serve.

Step 1: Place your gochujang, gochugaru, garlic paste, sugar, and soy sauce in a bowl and mix well.

Step 2: Fill your saucepan with water, add your dashi packet and gochujang mixture, and bring to a boil.

Step 3: Add onions and tteokbokki into the saucepan and cook until tteokbokki is soft.

Step 4: Then, add in your ramen noodles.

Step 5: When your noodles are at your desired doneness, add your boiled eggs and serve.

The word satisfying doesn’t even begin to cut it—slurpable with chewy bits of tteokbokki then coupled with ramen coated in this thick sauce. I had already queued the latest Korean drama on Netflix, changed into my comfiest jammies, and was all ready to enjoy the evening.

In fact, you add anything you like, you can add in some extra kimchi, cabbage, and even the spam for that salty bite. It’s as customisable as you would like to make it, so go forth and let the world be your rabboki.
