The essence of Keong Saik Road is irreplicable anywhere else in Singapore. A stone’s throw away from Chinatown, it is a space that reminds you of a time before skyscrapers in Singapore, but its fusion and modern touches doesn’t invoke that nostalgia.
Alegria Singapore is the newest addition to this vibrant and colourful hodgepodge; it opened on 22 April 2021 at 18 Teck Lim Road.
Starting out as the first sangria bar in Manila, Alegria has grown by leaps and bounds. Alegria Singapore is its fourth branch under its management group, Grupo Alegria. With the overseas expansion, they have added more global influences to their dishes, with Asian flavours and European cooking techniques. However, there’s a conscious effort to not compromise on the quality of Latin-inspired dishes.
Their current menu includes a multitude of exciting dishes made with exquisite skill, infused with ingredients from different cultures. Just their taco selection alone is pretty formidable. For meaty Filipino flavour with a refreshing twist, they have Sisig (S$8 for one, S$15 for two), consisting of pork belly, pigs ears, mango salsa, and chicharon. Their Koreana (S$8 for one, S$15 for two) is a crustacean delight with Korean spices, served as a taco with prawn topped with ssamjang aioli and kimchi, esquisites, and cojita. If you want your spice, Colifor (S$8 for one, S$15 for two) is an interesting option, with its floral-themed taco with purple cauliflower, sambal balbado, and flowers.
Don’t gloss over their mains, as they serve up plates that are trips to Flavour Town. Feijoada (S$30) is a hearty dish of lechon belly, black bean stew, masa farofa, and burnt oranges. If you’re feeling like a substantial steak dinner, Bistecca (S$70) is your go-to; a dish of USA Rib Eye, cherry tomato confit, smoked tare and chimichurri. Of course, these are just some dishes from their menu, with many more versatile options available.
According to Executive Chef Charles Montanez, Alegria Singapore serves food that falls on a different plane of traditional Latin food. Rather, it is an intersection of different cuisines with their very own style of cooking that fits the Filipino palate. Nonetheless, take a trip down to Alegria Singapura, for a gastronomic trip around the world.
