Fans of Hong Kong icon Amy Yip might want to keep Penang on their radar again, because the former actress is officially moving forward with her next hospitality venture. After making headlines with the launch of her first boutique hotel in Penang back in 2024, Yip later revealed plans to open a durian-themed hotel in the state.

The upcoming property, which is now slated to open in 2027, will reportedly become the 2nd out of 4 hotels she hopes to develop there in the future. It is said to be aiming for 5-star status after undergoing further refinements and upgrades.
According to Yip, the hotel was initially expected to open earlier, but she decided to delay the project to focus on improving the overall design and experience instead.

Adding to the project’s creative direction, Singaporean filmmaker Jack Neo has been appointed as Creative Director for the hotel. The is expected to feature architecture inspired by the appearance of durian husks, alongside durian-themed interior elements including customised walls, lighting features, and immersive design details throughout the space.

Beyond its visual concept, the hotel will also introduce a culinary experience centred around Malaysia’s iconic fruit. Its restaurant is set to offer a range of durian-based dishes and desserts, including durian hotpot, durian ice cream, and durian coffee, catering to both local and international visitors seeking a uniquely Malaysian dining experience.

The hotel will also feature curated activities designed to highlight the cultural significance of durian in the region. Guests can expect guided tours to durian farms as well as access to a durian culture exhibition, offering deeper insight into the fruit’s heritage, cultivation, and longstanding place within local food culture.
If all goes according to plan, 2027 might just bring the island its most uniquely Malaysian luxury stay yet. Are you excited for the opening of the durian hotel in Penang?
