Don’t you just love a good ol’ plate of nasi lemak? I’m sure I do. But what do you get when you cross this lovable local favourite with a succulent McSpicy patty? Pure bliss. Presented to you by Changi Nasi Lemak, here’s one of the best nasi lemak places I’ve tried in Singapore.
Established in the 1970s, Changi Nasi Lemak has been serving up its Legendary Changi Chilli alongside coconut rice since its debut. Seeing how many people relished their special chilli, they decided to preserve its recipe and pass it down for three generations.
When I heard about Changi Nasi Lemak’s McSpicy-inspired nasi lemak, I knew I had to try it immediately. I’ve never tried anything other than the original nasi lemak, and there’s nothing I love more than a spicy, juicy chicken patty, after all.
The very first thing I noticed upon opening all the takeaway boxes was the fragrant aroma wafting from it. It was almost ambrosial, and I could feel it beckoning me to wolf it down at once.
I received five boxes of nasi lemak with various toppings, some of which were particularly interesting to me. They all consist of a sunny side up egg, fragrant coconut rice, ikan bilis and nuts, and their famed Legendary Changi Chilli.
Starting off with my most anticipated set, I dove into the Spicy Thigh (McSpicy-inspired) Set (S$5.80).
Topped with a crispy chicken patty and a fried fish fillet, the Spicy Thigh Set impressed me in so many ways. I loved the juiciness of the chicken patty and its spiciness. It provided me with the same mouth-numbing sensation as a McSpicy would. Personally, I felt that the coconut rice helped to soothe the spiciness a little.
This was highly addictive, and I see myself ordering this a lot more in the future.
I found the Braised Pork Set (S$6.90) intriguing as well. I’ve never seen braised pork on nasi lemak before, so this was a first for me.
Right off the bat, I noticed that the braised pork gravy trickled down onto the coconut rice, adding a more intense flavour to the already fragrant staple. There was an ample amount of fatty parts in the meat and I loved the fat to lean meat ratio. This was absolutely scrumptious to me because I love braised food, and I honestly didn’t expect it to go so well with the rice.
I do have to say that the Legendary Changi Chilli tasted different from other nasi lemak places I’ve tried, and the chilli usually makes a world of a difference when it comes to determining which nasi lemak is better.
Changi Nasi Lemak’s Legendary Changi Chilli bore hints of sourness and sweetness amongst the mild spiciness. Packed full of flavour, this was no ordinary sambal chilli. I noticed traces of ikan bilis and onions in the chilli, to name a few ingredients. Made with various exotic ingredients that were handpicked by the founders of Changi Nasi Lemak, it’s no wonder the unique Legendary Changi Chilli is a hit among us Singaporeans.
If you’re looking for more mundane and simple flavours of nasi lemak, you can also get Changi Nasi Lemak’s Chicken Wing Set (S$3.90), their Chicken Cutlet Set (S$4.50), and their Curry Chicken Drumstick Set (S$4.90).
Do note that the prices listed are Changi Nasi Lemak’s online prices via delivery platforms. They serve ikan bilis and nuts at their storefront, but only if the customers request it.
