Calling out to all East-siders, specifically those residing in Tampines, The Original Vadai is stated to open its doors to you in mid-September in Century Square. One of the more prominent stalls you can find in a pasar malam (night market), the Original Vadai first decided to move from a temporary location to a fixed one by setting up shop in a hawker centre.
Today, they have a total of three halal-certified outlets located in Golden Mile Food Centre, Joo Chiat and Amoy Street Food Centre. Despite facing a hard hit by the pandemic, they’ve decided to expand their business to a fourth outlet located in Tampines.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with The Original Vadai, they started out as a small stall at the annual Hari Raya bazaars in Geylang Serai in the ’90s. Ultimately, they gained recognition for their take on The Original Prawn Vadai (S$1)—deep-fried fritters topped with a whole prawn and the rest, as they say, is history.
Vadai is traditionally made with fermented lentils. It is then pounded into a paste and deep-fried, akin to a doughnut. However, The Original Vadai seem to have done things differently over the years because the vadais they produce are lighter and fluffier than the classic version; a secret family recipe at best.
The savoury deep-fried snack originated from India but what makes The Original Vadai stand out is their popular Prawn Vadai which is said to be a uniquely Singaporean dish. So if you, like us, enjoy a fluffy vadai to pair with your teh tarik we know you’d be excited for the opening of their new outlet!
