The wait is finally over for Easties as Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market has reopened after a 3 month-long closure due to repair and renovation works. The mature estate of Bedok is sure to revel in the buzz of good food being available again in a matter of footsteps.

Though the original stalls remained relatively untouched, it’s always good to have a little reminder of what to look out for in the hawker centre. There are also new welcome editions that will only add to the amount of hidden gems in Bedok. So here are 10 best food spots at 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market that will make the long queues worthwhile!

1. Han Kee Fish Soup (#01-46)

Despite being completely unrelated to the other ever-popular Han Kee Fish Soup stall at Amoy Street Food Centre, the Han Kee Fish Soup stall at Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market holds its own and certainly does justice to its namesake. The owner has been selling fish soup since 1979 and has been at the current outlet for 25 years.

There are a couple of options to choose from such as Fish Porridge (S$5/S$6/S$7), Seafood Soup (S$5/S$6/S$7), Fish Head Soup/Bee Hoon (S$5/S$6/S$7) and of course the Sliced Fish Soup (S$5/S$6/S$7). They also have Tau Pok and Pig Skin in dark sauce.

2. Generation Coffee Roasters (#01-32)

Generation Coffee Roasters is probably the newest stall on the list, with it only just being opened on 26 Dec 2022. This is their second outlet with their first being located at Tekka Centre. Starting out as founders of a multi-roaster subscription platform, it’s safe to say Generation Coffee Roasters knows their coffee beans.

Unlike the many drink stalls in most hawker centres, they provide freshly ground and brewed coffee straight from an espresso machine. Think of coffee similar to what you’d get at fancy cafes, but at an affordable price. Some of the drinks include Espresso (S$2.60), Americano (S$3.10/S$3.60) and the must-have Kopi-O (S$1.50/S$2).

3. Prawn & Mee (#01-54)

Prawn & Mee 0237Despite being helmed by young entrepreneurs, Prawn & Mee manages to stand on its own feet as one of the must-try stalls at Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market with their own rendition of traditional prawn noodles. Before this, they operated an umbeboshi-based Japanese stall also at the same location.

There are only 2 items on the menu: Prawn Noodle (S$4.50/S$6.50/S$8.50) and Pork Ribs Prawn Noodle (S$4.50/S$6.50/S$8.50) with both available dry or with soup. The soup is said to be full-bodied with a rich umami flavour. As an added bonus, your prawns are served peeled!

4. Chris Kway Chap (#01-80)

Chris Kway Chap is one of those stalls where you would see the long lines way before seeing the actual storefront and with good reason. Chris Kway Chap is regarded as one of the best kway chap stalls in Singapore. Many have touted the tender pork parts and the rich yet balanced broth as the reason for the snake-like queues every day.

The kway chap is sold in portions from S$6/S$12/S$18/S$24. The set includes 5 items from the chef’s choice which may include pig skin, pork belly, pork knuckle, small intestine and tau kee. Items like fern intestines and preserved vegetables are only available on weekends and public holidays.

5. Pin Wei Chee Cheong Fun (#01-45)

Make no mistake, this Pin Wei Chee Cheong Fun stall is run by the same folks from their Pek Kio Market & Food Centre outlet. You could also say that the hawker business runs in the family as Pin Wei Chee Cheong Fun is family-run, with its hawker-related ancestry dating way back to the 1950s.

Many swear by Pin Wei Chee Cheong Fun’s chee cheong fun as the best on the island and it even appeared in a Michelin guide. They serve Hong Kong-style chee cheong fun that is delicate and silky smooth. You can opt for their different flavours such as Cheong Fun (S$3), Char Siew (S$4), Prawns (S$5) and Scallops (S$6).

6. You Zha Kueh (#01-43)

You Zha Kueh is a vegetarian stall selling fried goods such as you tiao and sesame balls. However, it’s not any ordinary you tiao stall— it has been recommended by Makansutra and even made an appearance in a Singapore food guide.

Their you tiaos are said to be very light, crispy and yet not greasy. Furthermore, they offer 2 unique you tiao flavours such as Charcoal You Tiao (S$1.50) and Green Tea You Tiao (S$1.50). There are other dough-based goods like Butterfly Bun (S$1), Plain Salted Bun (S$1) and Salted Bun with Salted Green Bean Paste (S$1). It is also immensely popular, with the stall being sold out before 10.30am most of the time.

7. Ma Bo Lor Mee (#01-76)

If that doesn’t convince you, the many articles that are displayed at the forefront of the stall covering Ma Bo Lor Mee might just do the trick.

Each order of Ma Bo Lor Mee (S$3/S$4) comes with a generous amount of fish cakes, egg, pork belly and fried fish. You can also try its other lor mee dishes such as Fried Fish Lor Mee (S$3.50/S$4.50) and Chicken Cutlet Lor Mee (S$4/S$5). There’s also a separate dish for Fried Fish (S$1/S$2/S$3).

8. Joo Chiat Chiap Kee (#01-31)

Joo Chiat Chiap Kee Bedok 1As the name suggests, Joo Chiat Chiap Kee first started out in Joo Chiat Market nearly 60 years ago! They made the move to Blk 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market in 1979 and have been here ever since. It is currently run by a third-generation hawker, the grandson of the original owner.

More importantly, Joo Chiat Chiap Kee is known for their handmade fishball noodles with prep starting in the wee hours every morning. They also use only the freshest yellowtail fishes to make their fishballs and fish dumplings to not compromise their quality. You can opt for their various noodles such as Mee Pok, Fishball Kway Teow Mee Soup, Fishball Tang Hoon Soup at S$3.50/S$4.50.

9. Sin Ho (#01-75)

Sinho ExteriorWhilst most stalls at 216 Bedok Food Centre and Market close by late afternoon or at most in the early evenings, Sin Ho provides you with authentic Cantonese zi char in the evening, making dinner outings fuss-free around this area.

They are open in the morning but only serve a wide array of fish soups like Batang Fish Egg Soup (S$5/S$6), Crayfish Seafood Soup (S$10/S$15) and Red Grouper Head Soup (S$8/S$10). However, the main star of the event is the zi char offerings such as Prawn Paste Chicken (S$8), Crayfish Seafood with Bee Hoon (S$15) and Sambal Seafood (S$16).

10. Ah Fu Prawn Noodle (#01-78)

Ah Fu Prawn Noodle - Exterior ShotAh Fu Prawn Noodle’s recipe can be traced back more than a century ago as the late owner, Ah Hock, was mentored by a first-generation migrant who immigrated from Fujian in the 1880s. Initially starting out at MacPherson, he moved to Bedok almost 5 decades ago.

Ah Fu Prawn Noodles uses the same recipe and ingredients as how they started. There’s only one item on the menu which is expectedly the Prawn Noodles (S$4/S$5/S$6/S$7). Each order comes with strips of lean pork, prawns and the signature rich and flavorful broth. The noodles usually sell out before 12pm so be prepared!
